Sumac is more than just a food magazine, it's a whole community that aims to appreciate life, in all its wild diversity, through the lens of humanity's most basic, common ritual: sharing food and drink. In a world that's full of barriers, we want to tear down walls by breaking bread with strangers through the medium of a handsome 128-page print magazine full of stories from fascinating humans from around the planet.

Whether diving deep into pressing social issues, uncovering the age-old traditions of a corner of the world that doesn't get much attention, or waxing nostalgic about your great grandmother's most poignant childhood memory, we believe food is the most exciting tool we have to bridge the divide between people across the globe. Chapter 01: “The First of Everything”

Having non-binary actor from “Billions” Asia Kate Dillon on the cover, our first issue covers a wide array of human experience. We share a home cooked meal with a young Hasidic couple and learn what happens when a rabbi finds God through LSD. We meet a community of gender flexible New Yorkers who tell us what it means to find liberation in rejecting social norms. We hear from two of the world's best-known chefs, Massimo Bottura and Daniel Humm about what the quintessential memories are that have inspired their creations to this day. We meet 'the godmother of performance art', Marina Abramović, and learn how her grandmother's cooking and endless Turkish Coffee have impacted her work. From VR pioneer/computer scientist Jaron Lanier to visual artist-adult movie actor Colby Keller, we host some delightfully unexpected guest contributors.
